The    Inbreds!

The Inbreds @ The Elmo

This is an interview I did with the Inbreds at the Elmo combo in Toronto on Thursday October 30th, 1997. It’s one of my favorite interviews that I have ever done!! Mike was basically the one we did the interview with because Dave had to clean up all the equiptement, but Dave added in his 2cents here and there.

ANDREA: How did you guys meet?

MIKE: We met in grade 10, we both grew up in Oshawa, that’s where we will be staying tonight actually, at our parents place in Oshawa. We met in high school and Dave had his own DJ service going. You know he would go to elementary schools and spin some records, and I could play banjo and my brother bought an electric guitar so I went over to Dave’s house and we started to play a little bit of music through his DJ pa system. Right from the start we were playing music. We just kept doing it, we would do it every Sunday and we did it for years. We didn’t really form the Inbreds until we moved to Kingston. We were both going to school at Queens University and so we have been together as the Inbreds for 6 years in February.

ANDREA: How come you moved to Halifax?

MIKE: How come?. Well we have done a lot of touring across the country, and well we thought it was time to move because a lot of friends from university had accepted jobs and moved all over and because Kingston wasn’t our home town we didn’t have a lot of friends, except those ones from university which were moving away. It was like well where do you want to move, and we had a steady source of income with the record contract we had singed. So we were like, we can move out East. It was always our favorite place when we toured.

ANDREA: Do you know any inbreds?

MIKE: Well, my cat I would guess and my dog were inbreds I imagine. No I don’t know any, except for Dave.

ANDREA: How did prince turn into wood?

MIKE: Well what happened was, well he didn’t really turn into wood. Well you see Prince was a toy, but there was a real dog named Prince after that toy. The dog named Prince was shot and died -this is a real story- and so we had the choice to either put him on this set of wheels, but we decided to put him down instead. ANDREA: A set of wheels so he could move?

MIKE: Yea, he was paralyzed from the neck down. We didn’t think that it would be very good for a dog to live like that. Unfortunately you have to make those decisions like that for animals, and maybe its not right to do that but he was unhappy.

ANDREA: Oh,

MIKE: You’re surprised, you didn’t know it was a real dog or anything right?

ANDREA: No, I didn’t have a clue. Aww, that is sooooooo very very sad!

MIKE: That was a rather somber one.

ANDREA: hrm...ok...Do you ever regret being in a band?

MIKE: I used to <>

DAVE: Didn’t you see the high five’s we were giving each other tonight?

ANDREA: Yup!

DAVE: That’s the way it is all the time!

ANDREA: Always happy?

DAVE: Always! No regrets!

ANDREA: Who is the worst band in the universe?

MIKE: The Age of Electric

DAVE: The Hagged Hardy Band

ANDREA: What would be the best karaoke song to sing to?

MIKE: I already know this one!! “I just called to say I love you” -Stevie Wonder

DAVE: What’s that one from Top Gun??

MIKE: Not, I had the time of my life? Hrm...you’re thinking of The richous Brothers you’ve lost that love for feeling.

ANDREA: Who is that lady on Its Sydney or the bush, the one who is talking about her childhood memories?

MIKE: Well, uh, that’s, well we don’t know. That is from a tape recorder from the linguistic language, its a long story, but it’s a real to real tape and that voice was already on there. It was from the language dept. @ Queen’s university. So we really don’t know how old it is, or who it is, or well anything about it!

ANDREA: What’s one of your favorite childhood memories?

MIKE: Oh, I know! You see, I played hockey and I wasn’t really good. I wasn’t bad, I just didn’t understand the game. Well one day I met Bobby Or. When I met him I was soooo excited, and then I played a game of hockey and I scored two goals and I was terrible! I scored twice on my own net, so I guess those two goals cancel those other two out but that was the most exciting day of my life probably till, well...yet! And that was when I was 8.

ANDREA: What other instruments do you play?

MIKE: I play banjo a little bit. I also play piano. I do that a lot on the new record. I definitely play guitar, that was the first thing I learned. I can play the bass, but not so hot, you know I can play it in my style, which is neither guitar nor bass.

ANDREA: Would you ever move here (To Toronto)?

MIKE: I dunno, probably not, I like visiting. But who knows.
